We were lucky to escape the attack: Younis
Pakistan captain Younis Khan said his team was lucky to escape the terrorist attack that left six Sri Lankan cricketers injured in Lahore.
Pakistan captain Younis Khan said his team was lucky to escape the terrorist attack that left six Sri Lankan cricketers injured in Lahore on Tuesday.
"We were lucky to escape by a few minutes," he said. "We were coming after them but were told by security people to turn back. I'm relieved that my boys were spared the pain because most of them are young and I don't know whether I could have managed things had we come under attack."
Younis compared the attack to his former coach Bob Woolmer’s tragic death during the World Cup in Kingston, Jamaica, saying that both incidents left him and his team in deep shock.
“In my playing career I’ve gone through two major shocks. One was the death of Bob Woolmer and now this,” said Younis after unidentified gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team's bus, leaving eight, including six policemen, dead.
Pakistan’s then coach Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room on April 18, 2007 just a day after his team lost to minnows Ireland and was knocked out of the World Cup. The Jamaican Police declared Woolmer was murdered and launched an inquiry, also quizzing the Pakistani players.
Younis said the Lahore incident was a great tragedy but hoped that Pakistan cricket will bounce back from it.
He said a united effort was needed to ensure that Pakistan didn’t go into international isolation after the Lahore incident.
