Till West Zone's Suryakumar Yadav scored his half-century, the Public Announcement (PA) system at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium at Valsad incorrectly addressed him as Suryakumar 'Nayudu'. But by the time a standing ovation from his teammates and the handful of spectators greeted him back to the pavilion, the name was announced correctly. And the chances of the mistake being repeated, at this venue at least, would have diminished drastically. Because by the time he was dismissed for a 137-ball 134, Yadav had helped his team weather a storm and reach a respectable position.

Yadav joined skipper Cheteshwar Pujara (55) in the middle with his team reeling at 41 for four on Day 1 of the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal against East Zone. West Zone ultimately finished on 299 for seven at stumps.

Brief scores: West Zone 1st inns: 299 for 7 (C Pujara 55, S Yadav 134; Nechim 3/56)
