The five zonal cricket academies could be reinstated soon after a National Cricket Academy (NCA) board meeting approved the concept and forwarded it to the BCCI working committee for approval.
“The issue was raised in the meeting and everybody agreed to revive the academies,” a member of the NCA board told HT over phone from Bangalore.
If cleared by the BCCI, the state academies might come under the national body. However, the future of the NCA is still unknown after Thursday’s meeting was left incomplete due to a different turn of events.
Proceedings were apparently held up after members were told that the BCCI had lost close to Rs 50 crore in a land deal over acquisition of almost 50 acres for an academy near Bangalore airport. Filling up vacancies of the support staff couldn’t be discussed after this was revealed. The land deal was done in 2010.
