He was abandoned by his family, dumped by his girlfriend, sold his shop and mortgaged his ancestral property— all for his love towards the captain of India’s cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Ravindar Kumar Saini, 28, who has celebrated every one of Dhoni’s birthdays by distributing sweets, received a phone call from Dhoni offering him a job as caretaker in his farmhouse in Ranchi.
Saini first came to Ranchi in 2010. Short on money and having cut all ties with his family, he started working as a waiter in the roadside hotels of Ranchi.
Year after year, despite never earning enough, he always made it a point to distribute sweets on the occasion of Dhoni’s birthday (July 7).
“On Saturday, I got a call from Dhoni and he offered me the job of caretaker in his farmhouse as a ‘return gift’ on his 32nd birthday,” said Saini.
Saini claims to have spent more than Rs 50,000 to celebrate Dhoni’s birthday in 2009.
“I saved Rs 20,000 especially to celebrate his birthday. I mortgaged my ancestral land and arranged for Rs 30,000 more. Over 250 guests were invited and I had also arranged for a good DJ,” Saini recalled.
He said that he will officially take up the job of caretaker for Dhoni’s farmhouse near Ring Road on July 10.
“I will happily work even for free; all I want is to be remembered as the greatest fan of his that ever lived,” Saini said.
