Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jaywardene tendered his resignation from Test cricket.

The Sri Lankan cricket board says in a statement released on Monday that the 37-year-old is to retire from Test cricket after the forthcoming Test series against South Africa and Pakistan.

In a letter to SLC chief executive officer Ashley De Silva, Jayawardene stated that "it was not an easy decision to make given that it has been a great privilege and honor representing my country during the past 18 years, but I believe this is the right time."

Jayawardene will continue to play ODIs for Sri Lanka. Since his debut in 1997, he has played 145 Tests, scoring 11,493 runs at an average of 50.18 with 33 hundreds.
