Akhara Parishad withholds second list of fake saints after members object to some names

The Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad (ABAP) - an umbrella body of Hindu seers - is withholding the second list of fake saints owing to reservations by some of its members, its president said on Thursday.
The second list will be made public by next month, ABAP president Mahant Narendra Giri said.
The ABAP released the first list of fake saints at a meet in Allahabad on September 10.
Giri confirmed to HT that the delay was due to reservations by some of the group’s members on a couple of names, including self-proclaimed Shankaracharyas.
“We want to clean Sanatan Dharma from charlatans, who are no saints but pretend to who say they follow tradition but don’t belong to any tradition,” the seer said. “We will surely include maximum names in the second list.”
The first list of the fake saints included Aharam Bapu, Radhe Maa, Swami Om, Om Bhagwan, Sachidanand Giri and Gurmeet Ram Rahim among others.
ABAP general secretary Mahant Hari Giri said discussion and research on such trickster saints and self-styled godmen was a rigorous exercise that takes time.
“People should understand that it’s a complex process (releasing list). Many such saints have taken legal route against their inclusion on fake saint list by Akhada Parishad.”
“We are under no pressure and we are unanimous within Akhada Parishad regarding the list. A final meeting of all office bearers of Akhada Parishad will be called to ensure avoidance of any controversy or opposition within Parishad,” Hari Giri said.
