On Sunday evening, when a team of eight crooks came knocking at the house of businessman Yashpal Tandon claiming to be from the Enforcement Directorate, he didn’t have reasons to doubt them—more so because he had reasons to fear such a raid.
The team, including two women, rummaged rooms and finally layed their hands on Rs 6.5 lakh the businessman, who is also a builder, had kept at home as part of the illegal scheme he ran: offering jewellery in return for pocket-friendly installments.
The raiders threatened Tandon they knew about his tax evasion and sought more money to hush things up. The businessman quickly dialled his relatives and corralled together Rs 15 lakh more and jewellery worth lakhs, said city SP Ajay Singh.
After the raiders left, his relatives told him it could be a fake raid. He contacted the police. The police talked to the ED and confirmed it was a team of conmen who ripped off the businessman.
Police have released a sketch of a person suspected to be part of the raid.
