Incidents of theft and other crimes have risen in Dehradun in the recent past, according to official figures, though the police said they were keeping a strict vigil and taking prompt action.
According to data from the senior superintendent of police’s office, the city reported 345 cases of theft in 2015 as compared to 307 in 2013 and 340 in 2014. The number of rape cases was 45 in 2015 as compared to 32 in 2013 and 44 in 2014.
Similarly, cases of dowry harassment have also gone up to 143 in 2015. The number of cases was 130 in 2013 and 115 in 2014.
SSP Dehradun Sadanand Date said the police were doing their utmost to arrest thieves in the city. “We are strengthening the network of informers and have been getting success in nabbing thieves,” he said.
He asked people to be cautious when going out after locking their homes. The should inform the nearest police station and also ask neighbours to be alert, he said. He said awareness was growing among people for registering cases of petty thefts, so the number of registered cases was rising.
He said security of women was a top priority of the police. Police were giving priority to cases of dowry harassment.
