The Uttarakhand police on Wednesday stated that city-based Sameer Sardana, who had been arrested by the Goa police following an Islamic State threat to the state, was inclined towards radical Islamic ideology, even as his family expressed shock over his arrest and denied links with any terrorist organisation.
Although the police were not willing to make it public, sources in the department revealed that preliminary investigations indicated that Sardana, 42, has leanings toward radical Islam. This has made the police further investigate the activities and contacts of the Race Course, Dehradun resident.
“We are trying to investigate further into Sardana’s activities and find out his networks from every possible aspect. Nothing can be said about the investigation beyond that,” said IG Garhwal Sanjay Gunjyal. He also stated that a police team has been sent to Sardana’s house for investigation.
However, Sardana’s father, an 80-year-old retired army officer, denied that his son had any links with terrorist outfits. “He is a chartered account by profession and has a clean image. My son cannot have links with any terror outfit or anti-national group. It’s shocking to learn about his arrest” he said.
Sardana was arrested by the Goa anti-terrorist squad and local police from Vasco railway station on Tuesday and has been booked under Section 41 of CrPC.
