Gairsain session ends amid chaos

dehradun Updated: Jun 12, 2014 14:58 IST
Gairsain assembly session

The Gairsain assembly session ended amid chaos on Wednesday. The opposition demanded a debate on alleged irregularities in the new liquor policy which envisages two Foreign Liquor (FL2) dealers in the state. Opposition leader Ajay Bhatt and his legislative wing colleagues were reluctant to listen to the CM and Speaker’s pleas to continue house proceedings.

As soon as the house assembled at 11 am on Wednesday, Bhatt reiterated his demand. Bhatt stood up with his demand to take up FL2 issue for discussion under rule 310 but Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal did not entertain it. This forced the BJP legislators to protest inside the house and raised the pitch of their demand. This led to pandemonium in the house forcing the Speaker to adjourn the assembly till 11.30 am.

When the house reassembled at 11.30 am, the opposition was adamant on its demand and resumed sloganeering against the government. The Speaker tried to persuade the opposition to take part in assembly proceedings as Wednesday was the last day of the session and there was other important state centric business to take up. Kunjwal was seconded by the CM in his attempt to persuade the opposition members but their efforts went in vain. However, the treasury bench managed to pass two government resolutions.

As the opposition did not relent and the pitch went higher, Kunjwal announced assembly suspension sine die. After coming out of the house Bhatt alleged that the government and chief minister failed to respect parliamentary procedures and passed the bills and resolutions without taking the opposition into confidence. He claimed that government’s behaviour was undemocratic.
