Government employees in Uttarakhand could play a decisive role in the Lok Sabha elections, going by their numbers. Of the 6,700,000 voters in the state, there are 6,50,000 government employees. If every employee has a minimum of five members in the immediate family it adds up to 30,00,000 — almost half the state’s electorate.

And the government employees might play an important role during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand.

President of State Employees Joint Council Prahlad Singh said that the government employees in the state number 6.5 lakh, which includes those in corporations and semi-government organisations. He added that every government servant is linked to about five family members, which takes the number of their votes to around 30 lakh. They will play a vital role in shaping of politics in the state and India.

Government jobs are the most coveted among the people here and the youth are known to keep preparing for government services rather than take up private jobs.

The government has recently announced 940 posts of assistant teachers in the state that might enthuse the youth. This apart, the government has also increased the age limit for applying to government jobs to 42 years. This might impact the youth who are hoping to get government jobs.

“The decision to increase the age limit for applying for government jobs would not have much impact on the voters as this would be fruitful only if the age for retirement is increased to 62 years. The present age for retirement is set at 60 years and those getting into government services would not get the benefit of pensions in such a case,” Singh said.
