Dehradun: If sources in the health department are to be believed, director general (DG) health, Dr JS Pangati, might get extension due to the upcoming panchayat polls. He was scheduled to retire on Friday (February 28).

An officer in health directorate requesting anonymity told Hindustan Times,

"There are rumors doing the rounds that Pangati might get three-month extension as DG health. State government is planning not to make any changes on DG level because panchayat polls are near."

After former DG Yogesh Sharma had retired on August 30, state government had deployed GS Joshi as officiating DG health. But being senior most in department, Pangati had alleged that he was sidelined and filed a PIL in the high court in this regard. The court directed Uttarakhand government to conduct promotion process within 8 weeks. Finally, Pangati took the charge as DG health in October.

The current development has created suspense as Joshi was scheduled to join as DG health from March 1.

"Extensions have never been provided to DG (health) earlier. But, it cannot be ruled out this time due to the panchayat polls," HS Manral, retired health officers said.

Despite repeated attempts, Pangati and principal secretary Om Prakash couldn't be contacted to comment in this matter.
