Young, aggressive and dull whitish Sultan is most likely to fill the vacuum created by the death of Shaktiman in Uttarakhand, SSP Dehradun Sadanand Date said on Saturday.
The state’s mounted police unit had been looking for a right replacement after Shaktiman died following fatal injuries in his hind limb during a March 14 Bharatiya Janata Party rally. Even amputation and surgical replacement couldn’t save the horse, whose death after a month had triggered outrage across the country.
Sultan is part of the new horse recruits to the mounted police unit. There is another Shaktiman-like horse, named Veeru, but Sultan seems to be a better choice in terms of his fitness and learning abilities, said RI mounted police KS Rawat.
Date, who has been closely monitoring the training of Sultan for the past five years, said that the horse was picking very fast and was fit to command the Independence day or state’s 16 anniversary day (November 9) parade.
“We hope his height and physical fitness will be able to bring the department out of its subdued mourning after Shaktiman’s death,” said Date.
