Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has issued a notice to director general of police (DGP) BS Sidhu and Haridwar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajiv Swaroop on Wednesday directing them to investigate into the scuffle which took place with advocates in Haridwar recently.
The complaint was filed with the human rights body by MC Pant, president of the High Court Bar Association, Nainital.
“We have issued notices to Uttarakhand DGP and SSP Haridwar to find out how and why the manhandling with advocates took place and sort out the matter within 24 hours,” Justice Rajesh Tandon, UHRC member, told Hindustan Times.
Notably, a scuffle broke out between advocates and some villagers on the premises of Bahadarabad court recently after which the local police filed cases against the advocates. The move drew sharp criticism from the bar council following which advocates from across Uttarakhand have gone on strike on Wednesday, and will continue it on Thursday, to press for their demand of withdrawing cases against them and removing the Haridwar SSP.
