GHAZIABAD: A 26-year-old Uttarakhand woman staying alone at a rented flat in Ghaziabad’s Rajendra Nagar was shot dead by two armed bikers in broad daylight on Thursday, police said.
Eye witnesses said an unidentified woman summoned the victim, identified as Rama Panwar alias Riya from Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur, to come down from her first floor flat in the afternoon before one of the armed assailants pumped bullets on her. The crime spot is barely 300 metre away from the Karan Gate police post near the Hindon air base. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to injuries.
Rama, who worked at a call centre in Noida, was married to a man from Delhi’s Shahdara, the police said, adding the man had committed suicide in 2015. Neighbours recalled that the victim mostly remained indoors and they did not see anyone from her family visit her.
The Uttarakhand woman had shifted to the Kanha Complex residential society nearly six-seven months ago, the police said. Minutes before she was shot dead, she was seen sitting at a nearby office on the same floor of her society where the unidentified woman arrived and took her downstairs.
“She had come to transfer some money to her account and paid me the cash. While she was sitting here, the woman arrived at my office’s main gate and Rama, upon seeing her, went outside. It seems they knew each other. The guard told me that they hugged each other and Rama went downstairs with her,” said Shafiq Ahmad, the owner of a web development firm. “She did not reveal much about her family but once showed me her photograph with a man, Abhishek, who she introduced as her boyfriend.”
The two women walked some distance before the murder took place. “Within a couple of minutes after the two women walked past my shop, I heard gunshots. I saw a man in white shirt rush to the bike of his accomplice who was waiting for him. I saw the woman bleeding and she fell down by the side of a tree,” said Raju, a local tailor outside the society.
Jitendra Kumar Singh, station house officer, Sahibabad police station, said the victim has a minor daughter who is in the custody of her in-laws in Delhi. “We received a formal complaint from her father in law. We have formed teams to investigate and are scanning CCTVs for clues. Abhishek is a Ghaziabad resident. We are trying to identify the unidentified woman,” the SHO said.
Rama’s father-in-law Chobh Singh Panwar, who lodged an FIR, said his son got married to her in 2013. “They had a love marriage. After his death, she moved out of our house and stayed away. They have a five-year-old daughter. She called up two-three times during this entire period and never told us she was staying in Ghaziabad,” he added.
