Residents of Pratap Nagar in Tehri district have threatened to launch a massive protest against ‘inordinate’ delay in construction of Dobra Chanthi bridge in the area.

The construction of the 440-metre-long bridge began in 2007 but there has been no progress in work except for some pillars being made. The government has spent Rs125 crore so far and it is estimated that the total cost will be close to Rs225 crore.

The bridge is the main route to connect Pratapnagar, but the delay in its construction has forced around 1.5 lakh people of Uttarkashi and Ghansali to travel about 35 km extra to reach their destination.

Rajeshwar Painuly, the chief convenor of the Dobra Chanthi Bridge Sangharsh Samiti, alleged corruption in the bridge construction and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the alleged lapses.

“They have asked us time till 15 August and we would not tolerate any delay after that,” Painuly said.

The government has now entered into an agreement with a South Korean company for making a design of the bridge.

Public works department secretary Amit Negi said the work would resume in September.

The consultancy and design related aspects are being looked into and the process is being expedited, he said.

Public works department joint secretary LM Arya said there had been a delay in the construction and they would complete the entire process soon.
