Three people were killed and eight others injured on Wednesday morning when a vehicle lost control and fell into a gorge near Seraghat in Almora district.
Sources said the vehicle did not have permission to ply passengers. .
Gaurav Kumar (21), Ajay Kumar (21) and Lachuli Devi (70), who died in the accident, were heading to Pithoragarh, police said. Six seriously injured victims were taken to a hospital, while the remaining two were provided medication at the nearest primary health centre.
According to the district administration, the vehicle with 11 passengers was on its way from Haldwani (Nainital) to Berinag (Pithoragarh) via Almora when it rolled down into the nearly 80 metre deep gorge. The vehicle was badly damaged in the accident. Locals called up the 108 emergency service and alerted the administration and the police.
A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team from Almora reached the accident spot, rescued the injured and retrieved the bodies.
“Whether or not the vehicle had permission is a matter of probe that will be done in later stages by the regional transport office. Right now, our objective is to provide medical support to victims. Six people are admitted to the Almora base hospital. The bodies will be handed out to the families after autopsy,” Almora district magistrate Savin Bansal told Hindustan Times over the phone.
Senior Superintendent of Police Renuka Devi said the three seriously injured were taken to a hospital.
Governor KK Paul expressed grief at the loss of lives in the accident. Paul expressed concern over the frequent accidents on the state’s roads.
