HARIDWAR: The Haridwar police on Sunday arrested a man from a minority community on the charges of molesting a minor girl, who had allegedly raised a false alarm of gang rape on being abandoned after physical intimacy.
The accused was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after a medical test at a government hospital. On Saturday, the Hindu Jagran Manch activists had protested outside the Ranipur police station and demanded immediate action against the accused.
The 15-year-old girl had come in contact with the accused when she used to attend her coaching classes, the police said, adding that the accused had confessed to have established physical relation with the girl who studies in a government school.
Superintendent of police (city) Mamta Vohra said the minor girl was in touch with the man for the past two months and had called him to meet at a city mall on Friday. The police, which interrogated the girl, said she wanted to elope with the man. But the accused took her to a secluded place where he molested her before leaving her there, Vohra said.
“Scared, the girl made up a false story of her being taken to a guest house at Piran Kaliyar and being raped by four men. She tried to rent a room there but a person grew suspicious and alerted the police,” the SP said.
Police went through the CCTV footage gathered from a camera near the mall and interrogated both the girl and the accused before the arrest. Senior superintendent of police Krishan Kumar VK announced a cash prize for the investigating team headed by Ranipur police in-charge Aishwarya Pal
