Squeals of joy, gasps of disbelief and sighs of frustrations and finally euphoria, the city had a share of all four during the cracker of a World Cup final match between India and Sri Lanka on Saturday.
People came out on the streets within minutes of the win to celebrate the momentous victory. India Gate, Katwaria Sarai , Delhi University hostels and colony parks reverberated with cries of joy and songs at 10.50pm in the night.
“This is amazing. I cannot believe this. We had waited for this for so long and now that it has happened, I am overjoyed,” said Satish Dogra (54) a businessman.
The city had gathered in sports clubs, parks and anywhere they could find a screen to watch the match and celebrated in style — and noisily with crackers — once India lifted the trophy after a wait of 28 long years.
Kasbah, a club in GK 1 M Block market was jam packed, with every entry costing between R1,000 and R 1,500. The crowd broke into cheers when the match winning six was hit.
The police were also ready for an uproarious response. They barricaded most of the Outer Circle of Connaught Place. After the win, the police stopped all traffic movement at India Gate. Security was stepped in all market places including GK Part-I, Defence Colony and other major markets.
