1 lakh more autos on way to Delhi roads

The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Delhi government to have 100,000 more autorickshaws on the city's roads, ending a 14-year-long freeze on registration of new three-wheelers.

Commuting is set to get easier in the Capital.

The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Delhi government to have 100,000 more autorickshaws on the city's roads, ending a 14-year-long freeze on registration of new three-wheelers.

There is one auto-rickshaw for every 304 persons in Delhi, but once all the new autos are in business, the ratio will come down to a healthy 108 persons per auto.

The court had on December 16, 1997 banned fresh registrations as autos were running on two- or four- stroke petrol engines, leading to severe pollution.

The SC directed that CNG-fitted new vehicles replace the old ones.
