Delhi may a well earn the reputation of being the divorce capital of the country. Of the 1.3 lakh marriages registered every year, about 10,000 do not spell happily ever after for the couples involved — they end up filing for divorce.
On an average, at least 10 divorce cases are being registered every day in different city courts. Alarmed by the situation, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has decided to set up a pre-marital counselling cell where young men and women and their parents can call for help and guidance.
“Temperamental differences and intolerance are the major causes for divorce,” said Sheila Dikshit at the inaugural function of the cell. But DCW chairperson Barkha Singh cites another reason. She feels the number of divorces was rising because of “parental interference”.
“These days there are small families and parents tend to be overprotective. I met a mother-daughter duo. The mother was provoking the daughter to force her husband to move out of the house they shared with her in-laws to a larger house. Parents are interfering a lot and this causes problems. I asked her rather sternly why she was supporting her daughter,” said Singh.
But Singh concedes that the bulk of representations received by the commission were from women who were victims of domestic violence or dowry demands. “There are many women who are suffering a lot,” she said.
Singh said the cell would help counsel couples have realistic expectations from each other, perceive each other as equal players in home making and being sensitive to each other’s feelings.
“Parents of the two parties will also be counselled on being supportive to the newly-weds,” said Singh.
