Anirudh Batra of Springdales School (Pusa Road) scored a 100 in both Maths and Social Science in the Class X Board examination. A few years ago, his result would have seemed odd to many. Students who were good in Maths and Science usually faltered in languages and Social Science. The story is very different now.

Till recently, Social Science was not considered a very ‘scoring’ subject. “The course has been considerably simplified now. Earlier, students had to study voluminous books,” said Jyoti Bose, principal of Springdales School (Dhaula Kuan). Bose said marks are now given for project work and internal assessment, which has made scoring in the subject easier.

“I have always been good in Maths and Science and I did not have to work much harder for Social Science,” Anirudh said.

Eleven students of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram scored 100 in the subject, but the school’s principal Shyama Chona said there is not much validation behind such high scores. “While some very good students have not scored very high in these subjects, others have got good scores. The marking system needs to be looked into,” she said.

Bharti Mahajan, principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, where six students scored 100 in Social Science, said, “The questions are more objective type and marks are based on school evaluation. This, with marks for practical work, has made scoring easier.”
