After 17 years of wait, around 100 judicial officers in the district courts of Delhi will finally get promotions. The Supreme Court has ruled on Wednesday that the seniority of sessions and district judges should be worked out following the roster system.
However, this would apply to those officers who were appointed after 2006. Those who joined before the cut-off date would be considered for promotion on the basis of their appointment date.
Setting aside a seniority list prepared by Delhi High Court, a bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, said it would not be fair to give priority to a later appointee, even if the gap is for “only a few months or even for a few days”.
The bench ordered the High Court to prepare a fresh list.
