The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the arrest of Taquee Ahmed, brother of Naqi Ahmed — who was recently picked up by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) branch of Mumbai police in connection with the 13/7 Mumbai serial blasts.

A bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir also issued notices to Delhi police, home ministry and Mumbai ATS. Taquee has moved SC saying the allegations against him and his brother should be investigated by an independent agency.

Taquee has sought a CBI inquiry and alleged he was being targeted by the ATS. His petition states he apprehends threat to his life as he feels that he would be killed in a fake encounter.

Taquee’s brother Naqi was arrested by the ATS for being involved in the 13/7 Mumbai bombings. The family has contested the allegations and claimed the brothers worked for Delhi Police and Intelligence Agencies. Delhi Police have supported the family’s claim.

Taquee’s petition before SC comes a day after the Mumbai ATS team reached his house at Abu Fazal Enclave to serve him summons. The three personnel wanted Taquee to join the investigations in Mumbai.

The summons sought Taquee’s appearance on February 27 at the ATS’s office. Taquee had apparently earlier relieved himself from the notice by posting a medical certificate.

On Monday, when the police personnel asked him to accompany him to Mumbai, Taquee demanded the presence of local police. The Delhi police later claimed the ATS did not inform them before serving a notice on Taquee.
