Five men, two of them Class 12 students, were arrested on Thursday for abducting and raping a 14-year-old girl who was on her way to school in west Delhi’s Ranhola. They were caught by the police while trying to dump the semi-conscious girl near her home.
Police said 19-year-old Rahul, the victim’s neighbour, had accosted her, offering to drop her to school in his friend Sandeep Kumar’s Tata Sumo taxi. When she refused, Rahul, with the help of Sandeep and another friend Aman pulled her into the vehicle, gagged her and drove off to an isolated spot in Dichao village. On the way, they were joined by co-accused Suraj, Ramesh Kumar and Narender.
Parking the car next to a drain, five of the men — not immediately clear who — allegedly took turns to rape the minor, threatening to kill her if she screamed. They then set off for Hiran Kudna village, close to where she lives.
Their plan was foiled when a passerby saw them with the semi-conscious girl inside the car. Suspecting something amiss, he reported the matter to a traffic constable in Mundka, who in turn alerted a PCR van.
“The PCR van along with the traffic cop intercepted the four-wheeler and found the girl inside. The accused tried to mislead the police by claiming she was unwell. But the girl managed to narrate her ordeal,” said Pushpendra Kumar, DCP (west).
Those arrested were 19-year-old class 12 students Rahul and Suraj, drivers Sandeep Kumar, 21, and Narender, 20, and Ramesh who worked in a shop. The sixth accused, Aman, 23, managed to flee.
A case of kidnapping and rape was registered under the POCSO act after medical examination of the girl confirmed rape.
The case adds to a spate of sexual assaults against minors in the city, in most of which at least one accused was known to the victim.
According to police records for 2014, the victims knew their alleged rapist in 96% of the cases.
