A Class XII student of a well-known city school was arrested for allegedly stealing his neighbour’s car to fund his expenses, police said on Saturday.
The 18-year-old was arrested from Karol Bagh on Wednesday during a Republic Day checking, when he went there to sell the car which he had stolen from Alakananda.
“A young boy was coming in a Maruti Car and on seeing the police picket, the boy tried to reverse the vehicle in order to run away. This raised suspicion and the police team immediately apprehended him.
“He was asked to produce the ownership papers of the vehicle. However, he neither produced any document nor gave a satisfactory justification for possessing the vehicle. On verification, it was revealed that the car was stolen from Kalkaji,” a senior police official said.
The boy had thought of making some quick money after his parents refused to give him his pocket money, as he was a spendthrift. His father is a general manager at BHEL while his mother is a lecturer. He allegedly made a duplicate key of his neighbour’s car. “He chose the car as he had access to his neighbour’s house. He drove off with the car on Wednesday and tried to sell it,” the official said.
