In a suspected case of honour killing, a 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death, allegedly by her teenaged brother who was furious because she went to meet her boyfriend late on Monday night against the family's wishes.

The girl, a student of Class 11 at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Mandawali, was stabbed with a kitchen knife in her house by her brother Sujeet Sharma, 18, who studies in the same class and in the same school. While the girl attended classes in the morning shift, Sujeet goes to the school in the evening shift, police said.

The girl lived with her father, her stepmother and four siblings at West Vinod Nagar in Mandawali, near IP Extension.

The police control room received a call about the incident from Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) hospital at 1.05 am on Tuesday.

On Monday around 9.45 pm, a senior police officer said, the girl, without informing her family members, went to her meet her boyfriend Ankit at his house in E-block, a few hundred meters away from her residence. Ankit, who has been living with his brother-in-law Dilip Gupta, was alone when she reached his home.

"Around 11 pm, the girl was with Ankit at his home when Gupta, a tuition teacher, arrived and objected to her presence in his house in the late hours of the night. He immediately called up the girl's parents and asked them to take her back home. Around half an hour later, the girl's father Ram Kumar Sharma, a carpenter, and her stepmother Sunita picked her up from Gupta's house and took her home," said the senior police officer.

"Even though her parents were very upset with the girl, they didn't beat her, " said a police officer. "But Sujeet was very disturbed. He went to the kitchen and in a fit of rage, picked up a knife and stabbed his sister in her stomach," the officer added.

"The girl collapsed on the floor and was bleeding profusely when Sujeet fled. She was immediately rushed to LBS hospital where she died during treatment," added the senior police officer.

Prabhakar, DCP (east), said Sujeet is untraceable after killing his sister. "A case of murder has been registered against him at the Mandawali police station and efforts are on to nab him," said Prabhakar, adding Ankit works as a supervisor with a private milk supply contractor.

The police are questioning the family members of the victim to know the exact reason behind's Sujeet's action. Ankit and his family members have also been questioned. Ankit has reportedly told investigators that the two were planning to marry each other but had no plans of eloping.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl was in a relationship with Ankit, who earlier lived nearby, for the past four months. They belong to different castes. The couple had been spotted several times together at public places.
