A 19-year-old man was arrested from the Vijay Nagar area in Ghaziabad on Wednesday for attacking his girlfriend with a barber's blade after she rejected his marriage proposal. The victim, a Class 12 student, had to undergo surgery and has 13 stitches on the left side of her face, the police said.

The victim was returning from her computer classes in the evening on January 28 when the accused, Bhola Shekhar, attacked her with a barber's blade. The accused owns a shop in Vijay Nagar.

"The man reportedly had an affair with the victim and had proposed marriage to her. But the girl's family turned it down because she was a minor and not ready for it," senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said.

The families of both the victim and the accused met several times to pacify him but did not accept his proposal.

"I was infuriated by this and attacked her so that she could be disfigured for life. She had an affair with me but rejected my marriage proposal," Shekhar reportedly told the police on Wednesday. The police also recovered several photographs of the victim and her educational certificates from Shekhar's possession.

The SSP also suspended a sub-inspector for delaying the arrest of the accused in the case, which helped him to abscond. Shekhar was booked for attempt-to-murder and criminal intimidation at Vijay Nagar police station, the police said.
