With cricket being the flavour of the season, it is time to get lessons on road safety from legendary cricketers like Kapil Dev, Bishen Singh Bedi, Kirti Azad and Maninder Singh, some of who made the country proud by winning the world cup in 1983.

From Monday, these cricket stars will be seen manning traffic intersections in the city. Accompanied by a team of traffic policemen, the sport veterans will also spread awareness on road safety.

On Monday, Kirti Azad will man traffic at Tilak Marg between 9am and 10am. He will also hand over booklets on road safety to motorists.

Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) Satyendra Garg said former Indian skipper Kapil Dev, Bishen Singh Bedi, Madan Lal, Maninder Singh and Kirti Azad would be roped in to conduct similar drives in the coming weeks.

Some of the chaotic intersections of the city that would be covered by them include Tilak Marg, Ashram Chowk, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi Gate and Sunder Nagar.

"After the World Cup is over, we will try and get cricketers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir," Garg added.

It is yet to be decided whether the cricket icons would wear |the white uniform, which was Indian team's uniform in the world cup of 1983, or the blue jerseys that Team India currently wears, said an officer of the department.

"On Monday, Azad will be accompanied by a team of policemen led by me. On other days, DCPs will be accompanying the veteran players," Garg added.

There would also be mobile safety vans at traffic intersections in this drive.
