1st Time: Cargo scanners to be used during trade fair

For the first time, a cargo scanner will be used at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) to scan the cargo and goods trucks of the exhibitors.

For the first time, a cargo scanner will be used at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) to scan the cargo and goods trucks of the exhibitors.

A big truck-sized scanner has been installed at Gate No. 1 of the venue, Pragati Maidan. “It will scan a big truck in 45 seconds. Not only will it make the procedure smooth, but will also ensure foolproof security check,” said Vikram Sehgal, GM, Security, India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO).

Stickers will be pasted on commercial vehicles carrying goods to the venue, which will carry information about the type of goods being transported. “Checking cargo trucks manually is a time-consuming task and this could also be a major loophole in security. The cargo scanner will make things a lot easier for us,” added Sehgal.

Over 6,000 exhibitors from India and abroad will showcase a range of products at the trade fair this year. Even during Commonwealth Games last year, cargo scanners were used at several venues.

Other than this, railings have been erected by organisers at Mathura road and Bhairon Marg to keep the venue sanitised. “People coming to Pragati Maidan without tickets will be sent back as they can be a threat to security,” added Sehgal.

During the 14-day long fair, the entry gate from the Pragati Maidan Metro station side will open to Metro commuters only. “Our survey says that 70% visitors use the Metro to come to the fair, so entry from Gate No. 10 will be for them only,” said Sehgal.

The entry for exhibitors’ staff has also been restricted. To control the crowd, badges have been given to exhibitors according to the size of their booths.
