Two persons, who used to buy airline tickets to steal from passengers, were caught by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is responsible for the security of airports across the country.
According to sources, the two were caught by the Ahmedabad police earlier this year for the same offence, but were released on bail. Officials said the two-member gang used the same modus operandi at various airports of the country.
The two men were caught following investigation into a complaint from a passenger on October 28. CISF officials said that this was their first attempt to commit the crime inside Indira Gandhi International Airport.
"A passenger who was travelling to Kolkata reported Rs 1.4 lakh cash missing from his bag. We started investigating the case and zeroed in on two persons who cancelled their tickets same day. On Wednesday, a similar complaint was received by another passenger. We looked at CCTV footages and found the same persons roaming inside the airport," said a senior CISF official, who did not wish to be named.
CISF sources said they couldn't catch the men as they had already boarded the flight. "We managed to trace Sheikh Sayed, who boarded the flight to Mumbai. We asked him to de-board and during interrogation he confessed to the crime," the official said. The CISF recovered some of the cash from Sayed.
During interrogation, Sayed told the officers about his accomplice Mohinder Sharma, who had boarded the flight to Patna. "We informed our counterparts in Patna and he was detained there," the CISF official said.
Sayed is a native of Mumbai while Sharma lives in Patna. The gang members used to divide the money and travel to their cities after committing theft.
According to sources, three members of the gang used to travel across the country to commit thefts inside airports. "If they failed to steal anything, they would cancel the ticket. We are now suspecting their involvement in more such cases," he added.
According to officials, these gang members visited Ahmedabad Airport for five consecutive days to commit theft. Each time, they bought air tickets, roamed inside the airport for an hour and walked out after returning the tickets.
