A two-month-old infant was allegedly kidnapped from a platform at Old Delhi railway station early on Monday.

Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage at the station showed a man in formals reportedly kidnapping the boy.

The incident was reported around 3 am when Karan, who goes by his first name, was sleeping with mother Vimla and two siblings — Rashmi (4) and Arjun (3) on Platform Nos. 9 and 10. His father Chandrabhan (30) had gone to the enquiry counter to check about the status of a train, they were to catch for Bhiwani in Haryana.

Police said the family, from Uttar Pradesh’s Badayun, had reached the station around midnight. Vimla had apparently taken a painkiller and was in deep sleep. She did not realise someone had walked away with her son till her husband got back.

“After the father raised an alarm, CCTV footage was viewed. It showed that a man in his mid-forties picked up the boy and left the station,” said Satyendra Garg, additional commissioner of police (crime).

“Before entering the platform he is seen buying a ticket from the railway counter around 2.15 am. After loitering for half an hour at the platform, he kidnapped the child,” the officer added.

A case of kidnapping has been lodged at Delhi Main Railway police station. Police are probing whether any particular gang was behind the kidnapping. The man may have dressed up in formals to avoid any suspicion, police said.
