According to police, the students had come to sit for the ongoing board exams at Mother's International School and prima facie investigation revealed that the accused duo intercepted Shahrukh, who goes by his first name only, as soon as he stepped outside the school gate.

"Shahrukh had a tiff with the accused when he refused to help them cheat during the Hindi exam that was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday afternoon," said a senior police officer investigating the incident.

The police said the trio got embroiled in an argument about what had happened during the course of the examination which soon turned violent.

"What had started as a discussion about his refusal to show them his answer sheet during the exam turned into a violent argument after the accused threatened Shahrukh and he refused to get intimidated by their threats. They started assaulting him before attacking him with a knife," the officer said.

Shahrukh, police said, was stabbed several times in the chest. He was rushed to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS, where he was admitted in a critical condition.

"Shahrukh made a PCR call immediately after being attacked and was rushed to the trauma centre. He is undergoing surgery and his statement will be recorded only after he is declared fit by doctors," the officer added.

Doctors at the trauma centre said Sharukh was in a critical though stable condition and was being operated upon.

"One of the juveniles has been apprehended and sent to the juvenile justice board in accordance with provisions of the law. We are on the lookout for his associate," said Amulya Patnaik, joint commissioner of police (southern range).
