A 20-year-old engineering student was found murdered close to his flat in Vasant Kunj in south Delhi on Thursday night.
Shobhit Modi, a second year student of Manav Rachna University, was returning home from DLF Promenade, a shopping mall, after an evening out with his friends and girlfriend when he was stabbed, probably a block away from his home.
"Preliminary investigation has revealed that Shobhit was very active when it came to social networking - both on the internet and otherwise," said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).
He had a large circle of women friends and possibility of him abusing substance couldn't be ruled out, the officer said.
A private security guard deployed at Gate 3 of C-5 block saw him fall and hit the boom barrier. He thought Modi was drunk. It was raining and power was out.
When Tekchand, he uses only one name, tried to speak to Modi, he didn't respond. On going closer, the guard noticed that Modi was bleeding.
He tried to call the police, but couldn't operate Modi's iPhone. A friend called Modi and Tekchand answered. He told her about the stabbing. The girl called up Modi's parents.
His father Suraj Modi, a general manager with MMTC, drove him to Fortis hospital.
"But Shobhit had died by then," Shubham Modi, a cousin, said.
Police have ruled out robbery as a motive for the murder.
"He was wearing a Tissot watch, branded shoes and carrying an iPhone. But attackers didn't touch anything," said Sharma.
Modi's girlfriend and friends are being questioned.
The police said they had found that the girlfriend's family was not happy with their relationship.
"We're speaking to the family and also the woman who called Modi," a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
