In 2007, he made news when he topped Class XII in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
And once again 23-year-old Savinay Kapoor is in the news for topping the MBBS final-year exam of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) this year.
The Delhi boy, who says is a comic film buff, did his schooling from Delhi Public School, RK Puram.
He has been awarded for highest grades in psychiatry, pediatrics and preventive social medicine in his MBBS exam.
President Pranab Mukherjee, who was the chief guest at 40th convocation of AIIMS, awarded the degree along with other medals.
“There is so much euphoria all around that I am only living in the moment. I want to do my masters in medicine or paediatrics like my father. I haven’t thought of anything else,” said Kapoor, who is now gearing up for his post-graduate entrance exams early next year.
Asked about his interest in surgery, the topper said, “I am just not the surgery kinds. I am very clumsy, I think. I would like to follow my father’s interest. Mysteries of medicine really interest me and surgeries scare me.”
Kapoor also refuted the general perception about medical students being very serious and studious. “I have never spent too much time studying. I always had a lot of time for films and other fun things,” he said.
His father Dr Prem Kapoor, who works at Hamdard Institute of Medical Science and Research, said, “My son has always given us a reason to feel very proud of him. I felt the same joy five years back when he topped his school, ranked first across all medical entrance exams and also cracked the IIT entrance exams.”
“I am extremely overjoyed but the only thing that irks me is that despite excelling in his medical finals, he has to still write entrance exams for his master with other MBBS students which is a huge bottle neck,” he said.
Kapoor’s elder brother Pranay is studying Master’s of Radiology at Batra Hospital.
His mother Seema is a principal at a government school in Saket.
