Thefts — house thefts and motor vehicle — have emerged as the single largest crime last year in the district. In its annual crime report, the Ghaziabad police revealed that more than 3,800 cases of theft were registered in 2010.
Vehicle thefts constituted about 64% of crime cases registered in Ghaziabad last year. However, that was still less than the 4,000-odd cases of theft registered in 2009.
According to the police, the overall crime rate in 2010 fell by about 8% as compared to 2009. All crimes — robberies, murders, rape, thefts and kidnappings — registered a dip in 2010.
Police said that they solved 87.5% of the 312 cases of crime against women — rape, eveteasing, dowry deaths and chain snatching — registered in 2010.
Also, police officials claimed that they arrested around 8% more criminals in 2010, when compared with the previous year. "Although the rate of arrest is high, the conviction rate falls drastically when the cases come to trial. More professionalism is required to put the criminals behind the bars," said lawyer Vikrant Sharma, a resident of Lajpat Nagar.
Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal, however, said the police force was entering a new era of professionalism.
"We are committed to control crime and work out cases. We have requisitioned for more personnel from the state and lodging FIRs is our priority. This year, we are planning to computerise each police station in the district. The efforts will control crime drastically," Lal said.
But residents of Indirapuram said they need more patrolling and police posts in Indirapuram, Vaishali and Kaushambi areas.
"Crimes like burglaries, vehicle thefts and chain snatching are on the rise in these areas. Even housing societies are not safe with crime reported every week from these localities. There has to be a mechanism to control these crimes," said Indirapuram residents' welfare association coordinator Kuldeep Saxena.
