Two days after killing two people, including a friend, a supposed psychopath on Saturday turned the gun on himself, fearing arrest.

Gaurav Kumar, 22, allegedly stole a relative's licenced revolver and killed his friend Piyush, 18, and a retired engineer, Prakash Chand Sharma, on Thursday. The Class 7 dropout resided in Brij Vihar and had a habit of threatening and beating people, the police said.

During a drunken brawl on Thursday evening, Kumar allegedly killed Piyush (who used a single name) at Brij Vihar with a .32 calibre revolver, stolen from a relative in Delhi who runs a security agency.

Piyush's father lodged a complaint against Kumar for the murder at Link Road police station. Two hours after Piyush's murder, Kumar allegedly killed Sharma, 68, at the railway halt in Chander Nagar with the same weapon. Sharma had gone to the railway halt for an evening walk. He was found dead and the police registered a murder case. Both victims were shot in the chest area, the police said.

The next morning, Kumar visited the house of his former employer, Rajan Sobti, to demand R2,000-3,000 and allegedly threatened to kill Sobti's daughter. He was allegedly in the habit of demanding money from Sobti, who runs a water bottling company.

"He told Sobti about the two previous murders he had committed and later Sobti told us about them," said Avneesh Gautam, Link Road station officer. Kumar called Sobti again on Saturday and asked him to deliver the money, along with some clothes, near a temple at Ramprastha colony, the police said.

"A scared Sobti took three other people with him to deliver the clothes," Gautam said. "When the accused saw four people coming, he fired a shot at them fearing a police trap."

No one was injured in the firing. But seeing four people coming towards him, Kumar got afraid. He loaded his revolver and shot himself in the chest, the police said. He died on the spot.

The police have seized the revolver used by Kumar.
