An ambulance with three paramedics, and a doctor has been kept on call 24/7 for any medical emergency, a 16-inch television set in a 15ftx10ft cell: These are the facilities being provided to Rajya Sabha member and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in Tihar Jail.
Singh, along with two other accused Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahabir Singh Bhagora, was arrested for his alleged role in the cash-for-votes scam on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody till September 19.
Singh arrived at the entrance of sub-jail number three at around 6.30pm. Two head warders first interviewed the three inmates and then recorded their details .Later on, a team of jail doctors examined the trio. The Jail’s Resident Medical Officer NK Girdhar conducted another round of medical examination on Singh, in view of his complaints of suffering from kidney-related ailments.
“Keeping Amar Singh’s kidney-related problems in mind, we have lodged in ward number four of sub-jail three , which is right next to the jail’s central hospital. An ambulance with a nurse and a nursing orderly have been stationed near the ward and will stay there 24x7 in case Singh requires any emergency medical treatment,” said a jail source. Kulaste and Bhagora were kept in the cell occupied by Singh.
The jail central hospital is equipped with facilities for lodging 150 patients. “In case of any emergency or dialysis, undertrial inmate Amar Singh will be taken to either Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital or the All India Institute of Medical Sciences,” said the source.
Singh will share sub-jail number three with other high-profile accused undertrials arrested in the 2G spectrum scam: Vinod Goenka (a director of Swan Telecom), Sanjay Chandra (MD, Unitech Wireless) and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s executives Surendra Pipara, Gautam Doshi and Hari Nair.
