A road-widening project being undertaken by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will result in the chopping down of 205 trees. The MCD will cut down 205 trees coming in the way of road widening and construction of storm water drains.

The civic agency has already taken permission from the environment and forest department. Following a final approval from the office of the lieutenant governor, the department has given its nod for cutting down the trees.

MCD officials said that the work of storm water drains and widening of carriageway was in progress in block 1 to 17 in Subhash Nagar area and during the progress of work, it was noticed that a large number of trees were coming in the expansion of the road and building of storm water drains.

"A total of 205 trees had become a traffic hazard for the fast moving vehicles in the region. A joint inspection was carried out by the horticulture and engineering departments of the MCD. Officials of the forest department also inspected the site and gave permission for cutting down the trees," said a senior MCD official. However, the permission has been given with certain conditions.
