The Delhi Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for stealing cash from one of the ATMs of Corporation Bank.

In March this year, bank officials noticed there was R1,83,000 short in its ATM installed at the main Najafgarh Road, Nangloi. Another shortage of R3,15,000 was noticed in the same ATM after some time.

During their investigation, the bank found that the seal of the machine wasn’t tampered with, indicating that an insider was involved.

“All employees concerned were examined and CCTV recordings of the ATM booth were also obtained and scrutinised. Eventually, Kant, an employee of CMS Securities, was identified as the suspect. His duty was to carry cash in sealed condition from the CMS vault to different ATMs,” Sanjay Kumar Jain, DCP (crime), said.

Kant’s job was of maintenance and loading of cash in the machines and for this, he had access to a particular lock code and keys of the ATM. Another site custodian from the company had another code.

“Whenever an ATM is opened, both the custodians have to come to the specific ATM and use both the lock codes and keys to open the cash machine,” he said.

Kant told the police that he had secretly noted the lock code of the other custodian while opening the ATM once.

“He knew that the guard posted at the ATM booth left his duty at 4am. So, he went to the ATM booth early in the morning and took cash by using the lock codes,” the DCP said.
