A 26-year-old married woman was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her central Delhi house on Wednesday afternoon. The police suspect the role of her in-laws behind the incident.
"The in-laws of the deceased, who has been identified as Harpreet Kaur, told us that she committed suicide due to depression. But her family members have alleged that she was persistently being harassed by her in-laws for dowry since she got married," said a senior police officer.
Police said the woman's husband, Gurudev Singh (28), found her body at their residence in Ranjit Nagar area at 3pm.
They were married for four years and have a two-and-a-half-year old son.
"Her in-laws claim that she was rushed to the adjacent Metro Hospital when they found her hanging from the ceiling. But the doctors at the hospital declared her brought dead on arrival," the officer said.
The woman's father, Manjeet Singh, told police that Gurudev and his family had made demands of a car and R2.5 lakh in cash as dowry.
"When we did not meet the demands of the groom and his family members, he (Gurudev) assaulted my daughter and even
told her to leave the house if her parents couldn't meet the demands,” said Manjeet Singh, the woman’s father, in his written complaint to the police.
He added, “We have no doubt that he has killed our daughter."
Police said no suicide note had been recovered from the woman's possession. Her husband works in a multi-national company in Gurgaon.
"When we questioned him, he said his wife had been depressed over her failing health and took her own life because she couldn't take the pain," said the officer.
"We have sent the body for a post-mortem examination and a case has been registered. An inquiry by a sub-divisional magistrate has also been initiated," the officer added.
