GURGAON: Three people had a narrow escape as a metal girder collapsed on an auto-rickshaw crossing an under-construction Rapid Metro site on Golf Course Road in Gurgaon on Tuesday. The two passengers and driver, travelling in the auto, sustained minor injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital by passersby.
People rushed to the vehicle and rescued the victims. The 28-year-old driver, Pawan Kumar, injured his head and the passengers received a few scratches. The victims were administered first aid and discharged later from the hospital, said police officials.
The incident took place at around 11.00am as the conveyor belt of the crane carrying the metal block broke and it fell on the rear side of the auto tearing its canvas roof and crushing the metal frame of the vehicle near an under-construction Metro station in Sector 56.
“We were working on the site and heard a loud crashing sound. A long metal block fell from above as the crane carrying it broke. A part of the girder fell on the back of the auto, crushing the metal body. The girder barely missed the passengers by a few inches,” said an eyewitness.
“No complaint has been given to the police by the victims till now. We are investigating the matter and inspecting the spot,” said Amit Kumar, SHO, Sector 56 Police Station.
The Rapid Metro officials said that they took all the safety measures and have also initiated an inquiry. They have also asked the contractor to submit a detailed report on the incident.
“...Despite the stringent safety measures in place, this incident has occurred. We have initiated inquiry,” said an official from Rapid Metro.
