3-year-long wait for renewal of BPL card

Ramasrey a daily wage earner in Bawana, on the outskirts of Delhi, turned citizen journalist to fight against the corrupt public distribution system in and around his area.
Ramasrey moved to Bawana in 2006 as part of a government re-location scheme for slum dwellers of Saraswati Vihar. In 2007 those who had shifted were asked to submit their BPL ration cards for renewal.
“I along with the others did what we were told. We got a slip in return against which we continued getting our rations till July 2009,” says Ramasrey. That’s when the local ration shops in Bawana refused to acknowledge the slip and stopped his ration supply.
“I visited the local food and supply officer to get my ration card but go no reply. Tired of running around I filed an RTI in 2010 to know the status of my card.”
On not getting a response, Ramasrey filed an appeal. He then approached the Central Information Commission that ordered an immediate inquiry into his case along with a compensation of R5000.
While Ramasrey got the compensation, he still did not hear about his card. He later discovered that according to the food and supplies website, his card had been issued and was in use all this while.
Left with no option, Ramasrey joined hands with CNN-IBN to question the food and supply officer of Bawana circle 7 about his BPL ration card. At first the FSO denied knowing anything about the matter but when pressed further he was forced act.
Finally, Ramasrey was handed his BPL ration card for which he had been waiting for the last 3 years.
