A bus carrying around 30 people returning from a wedding was robbed by a group of over half a dozen robbers near Neb Sarai, Khanpur in south Delhi, early on Monday.

The robbers, who came in an autorickshaw and a motorcycle, were armed with pistols and knives, police said. They allegedly took cash and jewellery from the passengers, including around 20 women, before fleeing in the same vehicles.

According to police, the driver of the bus was attacked when he tried to resist the robbery bid. A case of dacoity was registered at the Neb Sarai police station and three suspects were picked up for interrogation.

A senior police officer said that the occupants of the bus were returning to Sangam Vihar after attending a wedding in north-west Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar.

One of the robbed women, identified as Mithlesh, 50, told police that she was a guest at her brother Babu’s home in Sangam Vihar, and had gone to Swaroop Nagar to attend her nephew Rahul’s wedding.

“The wedding was scheduled on Sunday night at the bride’s home in Swaroop Nagar. After the wedding, some members from the groom’s side, including Mithlesh, were returning to Sangam Vihar in a bus,” said the officer.

Around 1 am, the bus broke down at Pushp Vihar area. The passengers were shifted to another bus. Around 2 am, the bus reached Devli Road in Khanpur area, when it was intercepted by an autorickshaw parked in the middle of the road and forced the vehicle to stop.

Suddenly, three men stepped out of the auto. In the meantime, three more men arrived on a motorcycle. They all entered the bus and took the passengers hostage after pointing pistols and knives at them. Mithlesh, who was sitting next to the bus driver, was robbed of her cash and jewellery. When the driver resisted, he was thrashed.

“Other passengers were also robbed of their cash and valuables. The robbers then escaped from the crime scene,” said the officer, adding that the matter was reported to them through a call made to the police control room.
