Impressed by the over-ground parking complex at Rawdon Street and the underground automatic computer-driver parking complex at New Market in Kolkata, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has hired the city-based Simplex Projects Ltd – the executor of the two parking projects in New Delhi – as project consultants for its automatic and computerised underground parking complexes.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to construct 30 underground parking complexes in the capital in the coming five to ten years and for this they have already floated the tenders. Work for the first of the 30 parking complexes in Delhi would begin any day at Kamala Nagar.
Simpark – the Special Purpose Vehicle of the Simplex Projects Ltd for executing the parking complexes – would lend their technical expertise to the builders and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for constructing these underground parking complexes.
"The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was impressed to see parking complexes. Our presentations in different metro cities about the computer-driven and automatic underground parking complexes were highly appreciated. Once the New Market parking plaza got underway and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi got a feel of it, they appointed us as their technical consultants," said Simplex Projects Ltd Deputy General Manager (Commercial) Gautam Dasgupta.
Things got moving for the city-based parking complex developers after the Bhurelal Committee in Delhi recommended multi-level underground parking plazas in the capital to make it easier for the vehicles to ply on the streets of the Delhi. Thereafter, the Supreme Court also passed an order asking the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to build underground parking complexes.
"To ease the pressure of vehicles plying on the streets, this is an age to convert on-street parking to off-street parking. And since the underground space is being unutilised, it provides the right place for car parking. And the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is using our expertise to go that way," said Vice President Simplex Projects Ltd Arup Chowdhury.
According to Ravi Dass, Engineer-in-Chief of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the New Market underground parking complex is a "work of art" and it adheres to international standards. "Not surprising that we want to use to the hilt the technical expertise of Simpark for the underground parking complexes in Delhi," said Ravi Dass.
Of the 30 places short-listed for having the underground parking complexes in the Capital, it is Connaught Place, Nehru Place, Ramlila Maidan, Parade Ground, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Sarojini Nagar and Karol Bagh which are first going to have this facility.
It is learnt that the whole project of 30 underground parking complexes in the capital would cost around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 crores. And each of the projects would take three to four years for completion.
"The technology that has been adopted for the underground parking complex in Kolkata would be applied in Delhi. That is the Dutch EWW and the Italian Proviron technologies would be incorporated for building these parking spaces. And these underground parking complexes would have on the top either lush green parks or pedestrian plazas," explained Gautam Dasgupta.
