A 30 year old woman’s husband shot her at point blank range in a fit of rage in Anand Parbat area on Wednesday, police said.

“The incident was reported at 10.30am and the victim has been identified as Sunita Mishra. We have arrested her husband, Pappu,” said a senior police officer.

According to police, the incident occurred when Pappu, a driver, who got married to Sunita in 1998, was fiddling with a licensed .32 rifle that belonged to his brother-in-law.

“Pappu’s brother-in-law Ashok Pandey, who is an Indian Railways employee, was visiting the couple and had brought along his licensed rifle. Pappu was fiddling with it when his wife challenged him to use it. He got angry, kept it to her forehead and pressed the trigger,” the officer said.

Police said that Pappu had claimed that he was cleaning the rifle when he fired accidentally.

“When we reached the spot, Sunita was lying in a pool of blood and Pappu first claimed that she was cleaning it when she accidentally shot herself. It was only after we questioned him at length about the incident that we learnt about him getting angry at his wife’s challenge and shooting her,” said the officer.

According to police, the couple has two children - a boy and a girl - who were both present in the house at the time of the incident. “We have arrested Pappu on the charges of murder and a case has been registered at the Anand Parbat police station,” the officer added.
