The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested four militants of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) from Punjab. The police said that the accused were planning to kill a Sikh leader to make their presence felt in Punjab and to revive militancy in the state.
The police said that the militants planned to kill five prominent leaders both political and religious on January 5 in Punjab.
They said the accused had hatched a conspiracy to kill religious leader Baba Piara Singh Bhaniarawale in Ropar, who has been provided round-the-clock Central Reserve Public Force (CRPF) security.
“The militants had planned to sneak in weapons concealed in milk containers inside the ashram of the Sikh leader,” said Karnal Singh, joint commissioner of police (Special Cell).
The accused have been identified as Baljeet Singh (34), Bikkar Singh (28), Kulwinderjet Singh (33) and Tirlochan Singh (45).
One of the accused Baljeet Singh told the police that while he was lodged in Burail Singh in Chandigarh, he came in contact with Jagtar Singh Hawara, the mastermind behind the twin bomb blasts case in Delhi in 2005 and was also involved in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
