There is possibility of introduction of Cheetahs from Africa in four states —Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh —wildlife experts said on Wednesday.

The Environment and Forest Ministry in June had given in principle approval to the Wildlife Trust of India’s proposal to re-introducing Cheetah in India, which had gone extinct in 1947 when the last one was killed by Maharajah of Surguja in MP.

Y B Jhala, a big cat relocation specialist with the Wildlife Institute of India said there are vast grasslands in these four states where the Cheetahs could be introduced with certain modifications and relocation of a few villages.

Junagarh Zoo in Gujarat has already started captive breeding centre for five Cheetahs imported from Singapore in February 2009.
