An attempt to stop robbers from fleeing after committing a daylight robbery cost a 45-year-old man his life and left his neighbour injured.

The incident took place around 11.30am in Basti Hazrat Khawaja, a residential locality behind Zakir Husain College in central Delhi, when two of the five robbers fired at Mohammed Sultan, and his neighbour Mohammad Nawab, 60.

The robbers had looted a small bangle-shop owner and his six workers of nearly Rs. 7,000 and a mobile phone at gunpoint. "The shop owner Mohammad Shakil raised an alarm. Nawab, who happened to be in that lane, overpowered one of the robbers. The robber then fired at Nawab in his hand and leg. Sultan, who was with Nawab, tried to rescue him when another robber shot him in his forehead," said a senior police officer.

Nawab, who suffered two bullet injuries, is currently undergoing treatment at Lok Nayak Hospital. A seven-year-old boy was also injured in the incident, but he did not sustain any bullet injury.

The incident created panic in the area and extra police force was deployed to maintain peace. Police said they were in the process of identifying the criminals. Local residents said this was the fourth incident of shooting in their area in recent times and hinted at the involvement of some local extortionists.

However, Sultan's brother Hashim alleged that the actual motive of the assailants was to kill his brother as he was a witness in the murder case of their younger brother Danish. "Danish was shot dead in 2010 and Sultan was a witness against the Aashu gang. Now they have shot him also. I identified two of them as Fahad and Asif," said Hashim.

Police said Danish had a criminal background, and that another of Sultan's brothers Kasim is a dreaded criminal in the Kamla Market area.
