A 58-year-old woman’s body was found at her house in Rohini area of northwest Delhi on Monday. Police did not rule out property dispute as the cause of the death.
The entry to the woman’s house was friendly, police said, adding that she used to live alone. Police said some documents were also missing from the house.
Harjeender Kaur had separated from her husband soon after her marriage. She was living with her elder sister’s family and had bought a property in partnership with her elder sister at Sector 4 in Rohini about four years ago.
Police said her body was found in the one-room house on the ground floor which she owned. The woman did not have any regular source of income and did not have any children either.
“There were no external injury marks on her and prima facie it seemed that she had been smothered to death. She was found on a chair and blood was oozing out of her mouth. The entry to the flat was also friendly,” said Sagarpreet Hooda, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
The incident was reported around 7.30 am on Monday when the son-in-law of Harjeender’s elder sister knocked on the door but did not get any response.
“When he went inside, he found my aunt sitting on a chair. He tried to talk to her but she was already dead. We called the police repeatedly but they reached late. They also took away huge cash and jewellery present in the almirah,” said Sonu Mehar, the woman's nephew.
Police said the body has been sent for postmortem examination and the reports would be available on Tuesday. “We do not rule out the role of any insider in the incident. We would be questioning the relatives later,” said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile, residents expressed fear and said they have started feeling insecure now. “Chain snatching is quite common in this area and now a murder has also taken place. It is quite scary,” said Mahesh Sharma, a local resident.
Residents said there were five entry gates at A Block in Sector-4 Rohini and only one security guard mans them. They said even the police patrolling was not up to the mark. A case of murder has been registered and further investigations were on.
